Outstanding PASS Volunteer

Last Updated on September 11, 2013 by John Morehouse

You never know what the day will hold that’s for sure!

Yesterday afternoon I received an email from PASS letting me know that I had been selected as a Outstanding PASS Volunteer.

To say that I was shocked was an understatement.  I knew that I had been nominated by a good friend of mine, David Klee (B|T),  but I thought for sure that there are others that are certainly more deserving than myself, so I honestly didn’t put much thought into it.   Being nominated in itself is humbling.  Getting the recognition was even more so!

Thank you David, for your passion for the community and for nominating me! It’s a real honor!

If you had asked me years ago if I would be involved with a local user group as a leader, I would have said, “Nope, no way”.  With the help of PASS,  Naras Jayachandran and I were able to start and lead a very successful SQL/BI User group in Omaha.

If you had asked me years ago if I’d be traveling around the country speaking about a technology that I absolutely love, I would have said, “Nope, no way”.  PASS helped change that with SQL Saturdays.   As proof, this year I will have traveled to California, Florida, Colorado, New York and potentially Washington, DC speaking at their local SQL Saturdays.

If you had asked me years ago if I’d be in touch with some of the world leaders in SQL Server (you know who you are), I would have said “Nope, no way”.  They won’t ever know who I am.  I’m just a DBA from Nebraska.  (BTW, Yes, we have SQL Server in Nebraska!) Being involved with the PASS user group helped to fix that!

PASS is probably one of the best communities out there and I’m seriously glad that I jumped on board!  If you’re reading this and you haven’t jumped on board yet, you should.

I look forward to continuing to serving the PASS Community not only here in Omaha, but every where I go.  I love being a part of the #sqlfamily and being a part of it has been one of the best things for not only my career but for also for my personal life.  This journey has been completely amazing thus far! And it’s not over yet!

Also, I realize that this post will go out on 9/11, so as you read this, please take a moment to remember the events of 9/11/2001.  If you can, thank a service member (active or retired) for their service and for their actions in helping to keep our freedoms safe.  If you can, thank a fire or rescue person for their sacrifice in their daily jobs.  While we might complain about shrinking databases or cursors, our military/fire/rescue/ems/police personnel are striving every day to keep us safe.

Thank you PASS for the award and I look forward to what tomorrow might have in store for me!
